Set high above the Tiburon Peninsula with sweeping views of Belvedere, Angel Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge, this project is a meticulous reimagining of a 117 year old Railroad Records Barn that once served the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and was later the office of famed Second Bay Area Tradition architect Charles Warren Callister. The owner - an avid train collector - was drawn to the building’s storied past, and our work approached the renovation as a refined architectural "restomod." The original barn remains firmly anchored, its historic frame carefully strengthened with new Alaskan yellow cedar beams and columns, and its exterior re-clad in corrugated metal that recalls its industrial heritage. Within this dramatic 20-foot-tall volume, the kitchen, dining, and living spaces unfold as a single, soaring environment, flanked by balconies and mezzanines that heighten the sense of scale. Behind the barn, the 1960s Callister addition was selectively re-worked, guided by the quiet rigor of his post-and-beam aesthetic. The resulting 5-bedroom, 4.5-bath, 5,608-sqft residence is warm, modern, and deeply rooted in its history - a coastal retreat that honors its lineage while embracing contemporary living
